CCS NYC Headquarters post Sk8ology install. CCS's Nardelli, JP, and Paul Kobriger
The call from CCS's Team & Marketing Manager, Paul Kobriger, came in…. "We're the major skate shop sponsor for The Maloof Money Cup Championships in NYC. We expect 100,000 people to walk through our tent over two days and need our pro decks to look professional….there are no walls there, just a 5,000 square foot tent….what do you have?"

Well, we'd like to think that we have it all….but when an event is 3000 miles away and we've got a budget for something 30 miles away, creativity is going to have to be a major factor in pulling it all together. Fortunately, between Mark Nardelli (CCS's Brand Director), Paul Kobriger (CCS's Marketing/Team Mgr), and the Sk8ology crew we were gonna make things happen.

Sk8ology's Schmiddy about to ask Joe Maloof for a loan.
Our friends at www.Bordz-Up.com helped us out huge by picking up supplies at a Home Depot in CT, and assisting with buildout 3 days ahead of the event. These guys have the premier storage solution for complete decks and we were stoked to use their product as part of our CCS/Maloof Merchandise display. The greatest part of this event was that the world class skateboard facility being built by www.californiaskateparks.com and was being paid for by the Maloof Family, would remain as a gift to the skateboarders of Queens.

The Maloof Money Cup New York City Skateboard Championships were the official christening of New York's best skate park. When you put up 250K in prize money along with an invitation to the best professional skaters in the world, you know there is going to be some talent showing up. And with the talent come the crowds…somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 people passed through the CCS Tent between June 5th and 6th. The crowds were wowed and for Chris Cole it was his second year in a row with a 1st place win and $100,000.00 check followed by 2008 champ, Paul Rodriguez and next-gen phenom Torey Pudwell. Mother Nature was kind in her letting the contest finish before dropping a solid rain on the festivities seconds after the finals ended.

After the contest's close, CCS's Headquarters even got a Sk8ology makeover as Skateboard Deck Display Frames moved from Queens to Manhattan. The upscaling was significant as boards came off of nails in the wall and went on to gallery frames with Sk8ology Fixturing.

See you all in Orange County in August!

Sk8ology & friends introduce The Carabiner Sk8 Tool.
May 15th, 2010

click to enlargeSk8ology's Design Team along with leading industry partners Plan B and Sector 9 are introducing the next generation of Skateboard tool in the form of The Carabiner Skate Tool.

There's never been an "on the fly" skate tool that does everything you need it to AND doesn't get in your way (or injure you if you land wrong) until now. Just attach to your preferred belt loop and you're good to go. Need your keys secured? No problem. Need a bottle opener after your Pheonix Am run? Covered. All that, and more, in a 72 gram (2 1/2 oz) lifetime guaranteed stainless steel package.

Better by design. During the creation process of the Carabiner Sk8 Tool we looked at every tool in the market - the ones that worked well would remain in your pack or car glove box while the ones that you'd take skating sucked performance wise. No longer is there any compromise and, if your the person who loses your keys, we've solved your problem as well!

Think green. We designed The Carabiner Sk8 Tool to have the highest degree of utility while using the least amount of material. Less material used in our tools means more stainless steel for your Mom's stove, sink, and appliances. It also means we can we can use the best stainless steel tool material possible and give you a part that weighs nothing and will perform for a lifetime.

The Carabiner Sk8 Tool will be available at specialty retailers everywhere starting in July of 2010, and sell for less than $10.- in the USA.
Sk8ology takes command of Deck Wall at The Berrics.
April 8th, 2010

click to enlargeBesides his Skater of the Year status back in '93 and countless accolades since then, one thing Salman Agah definitely knows is good art.

When he took over as Director of Marketing for The Berric's it was only a matter of time before there was a full wall showing off each limited edition Berric's Collab decks on a weekly basis - all matched up to which pro was battling which pro....We were honored to build The Sk8ology Wall inside the the all green LRG room and look forward to a lot more collaborations with Salman and The Berrics.

Next up: Berra's office & Salman's loft....you'll see em here shortly.
Colin McKay commissions Sk8ology Install
Encinitas, CA March 5th, 2010.

click to enlargePro skateboarding veteran and industry mogul Colin McKay recently dialed in his new house with a full Sk8ology Install.

Colin's been planning & constructing his new Encinitas mountain top home for more than 5 years and the final product is truly a work of art. Its modern design combined with the finest finishes and resort atmosphere make this a home suitable for Architectural Digest. "This is the house that Skateboarding built!" Colin remarked, as we checked out each of the rooms where we were to hang his extensive skateboard deck collection.

The first part of our install was a full 360 degree deck wrap around McKay's 24-Hour Fitness Gym. With 16 foot high ceilings the Sk8ology crew spent some time on ladders but the final effect was well worth it - The decks on the walls make for a nice visual diversion from all the equipment and sweat coming from below.

Look out for the HD film clip we did of Colin's house and full install coming soon.

Sk8ology honored to build awards for Skateboarding Hall of Fame Legends
October 25th, 2009

click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge
In the 1960's it was Bruce Logan, in the 1970's it was Tony Alva, in the 1980's it was Tony Hawk, and in the 1990's it was Danny Way. This was the inaugural legend list to be inducted into The Skateboarding Hall of Fame.

click to enlargeWhen we were contacted by IASC, International Association of Skateboard Companies, to make something special for the legends in the game, we were on a very limited time schedule and we knew that whatever was created would have to be very special. It all started with the words "there is no way we can give these guys a clear acrylic triangle with an engraving in it"..... With that we figured that whatever it was going to be had to be 100% skateboarding. It started with the frame. Why not take four skateboard decks and let that be the basis of the frame...? Since we had previous experience CNCing out templates for my old woodshop it made sense to use the same radius of the nose & tail to machine out a larger area inside the frame. Once done, we knew we had a winner when every single person that saw it exclaimed, "That is COOL!" With the frames done we sought out the professional photographers who had taken the most iconic pictures of these legends of skateboarding to get their permission & blessing to include their picture professionally mounted inside the frame. They were all stoked to be celebrating their heros and we were stoked to celebrate their moment of captured history in the award. Warren Bolster (RIP) was the only one we did not have contact with but Michael Brooke of Concrete Mag www.concretemagazine.com fame made sure we got what we needed: Bruce's epic downhill shot taken at La Costa. Next on the list was Wynn Miller www.wynnmiller.com whose relationship with TA produced endless iconic shots. We selected his most famous black & white shot of TA front smithing a well known pool. Tony's acceptance speech at the Hall of Fame Awards was very humble - most touching was his eternal thanks to Steve Van Doren of www.vans.com for Steve's life long support. On to the 80's and there were several heavyweight photogs that had iconic pictures of The Birdman, but it was J. Grant Brittain from The Skateboard Mag's work that got the nod. www.jgrantbrittain.com Tony's shot was taken in the Summer of 1986, in Sweden, probably right about the time the Bones Brigade Video's would change skateboarding forever...nothing like being able to slow mo a trick down on your VCR to speed up the learning curve from the worlds best. Who would have ever thought that 24 years after this picture was taken that Mr. Hawk would be an international celebrity, a video game icon, innovator of umpteen tricks, leader of a foundation that has given millions of dollars of grants to lower income communities to build skateboard parks CORRECTLY! click to enlarge www.tonyhawkfoundation.org and the definitive spokesman of the sport of skateboarding to the world. Well done, Tony! Finally, it was Danny Way's turn to bring in the 1990's with such a crazy vision of where skateboarding could go that the industry still wonders aloud...."where do we go after the Mega Ramp?" Mike Blabac www.blabacphoto.com captured the greatest of Danny's super-sized madness...world records, drop-ins from helicopters, technical street tricks at 45 mph with a 30 foot gap between rider and rail, etc.....The only physical thing keeping Danny human are the limitations of his joints...and even those he pushes to the end of the earth. We here at Sk8ology want to Thank all the above legendary skateboarders for their contributions to the sport of Skateboarding and pushing the boundaries of how fun & amazing skateboarding has been, is, and will become.

Larry Gordon, Founder of Gordon and Smith. Larry probably had not had this much attention in a lot of years. He always made it a priority to surf Tourmaline before heading into work. I want to be able to say the same after 50 years in business! Thanks again, Larry Gordon, for your kindness and contribution to the action sports world. G&S Teamrider, 1976-79
CEO, www.Sk8ology.com
October 3rd, 2009. Mission Beach, CA

Gordon and Smith turned 50 years old today. It was an incredible celebration. Generations came together on the Mission Beach oceanfront venue of The Wave House. Former teamriders and G&S employees came from all over the world to spend a day checking out half a century of surf/skateboard craftsmanship. This iconic home grown San Diego brand has a lot to be proud of: G&S FIFTY YEARS OLD.

Harry-O emceed the event & awards & speeches flowed like beer from the Wave House bar. To remain in business for 50 years is an amazing feat. Even more amazing is the inspiration of so many of the people that shared in the G&S success story and went on to further the branches of our action sports industry tree. I was fortunate enough to ride for the G&S Skateboard Team from 1976-79 and shared our team van with Doug "Pineapple" Saladino, Steve Cathey, Dennis "Flying Aces" Martinez, Chuck Webb, Ellen O'neill, Matt Barden, Masami Countryman, Henry Hester, Marty Schaub, Steve Sherman, Dogtowner's: Stacy Peralta & Paul Hoffman, kickflip inventor Bobby Boyden, and vert ruler Dave Hackett. Dave McIntyre was the original FibreFats and made sure we all behaved both on the road and off while he sold G&S skateboards and surfboards around the world.

I remember the incredible product innovations: The first glass/wood laminated board: The FibreFlex, The first dual durometer skateboard wheel: The YoYo, The first laminated wood deck: The Stacy Peralta Warptail 2. And, those early product advertisements in Skateboarder Magazine.. they were BEAUTIFUL. For years I went to sleep each night staring at G&S FibreFlex ads of 1975-77 issues of Skateboarder Magazine.

Gordon & Smith was more than just innovative products and a great team, it was a company with solid morals and integrity - the only company ever to pay a royalty to Larry Stevenson of Makaha for his game changing skateboard innovation: The kicktail.

I'll never forget the first time I went to the factory as an official teamrider to pick up equipment...the boxes of red/yellow Van's shoes, the mesh FibreFlex team jersey, the bright red/yellow sweat pants and jacket. Sorting through all the stacks of FibreFlex Teamrider models for just the right color freestyle board.....and doing the same with Slalom decks and Vert decks......I felt like I had won the golden ticket for Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory...and in the world of 1970's skateboarding, I did. Every week we traveled the west coast sharing the sport of skateboarding with retail stores, schools, concert venues, race tracks, car shows, military bases, etc…On the weekends there was always a contest at one of the many skateboard parks scattered across southern California or a Pepsi demo in that giant clear acrylic capsule.

Thank You to the Gordon and Smith families that created a company that spanned generations...All of us who were a part of the first fifty years tip our glasses to you as we look forward to the next fifty years!

Sk8ology ZERO's in on Chris Cole's House

August 28th, San Marcos, CA

It was the second weekend of July when Sk8ology’s Chris Klich & I watched in awe as Chris Cole methodically destroyed duplicates of multiple famous spots set up for the 2009 Maloof Money Cup Skateboard contest. Cole skated away with the 100K first prize for his efforts and the least we at Sk8ology could do was a home makeover for Chris featuring his favorite pro models over the years. We finally got a break in Cole’s contest & tour schedule on the last week of August.

Fortunately, every time a new pro model comes out Black Box keeps a stash of them so the morning we arrived at the Cole house he had already pulled multiple years of models from the Zero Warehouse. Five hours later we had turned a nice collection of Cole’s pro models over the years into a Sk8ology wall of art connecting the downstairs to the upstairs. Chris, his wife Red, and son Wyatt were all stoked on their new home gallery! Big “Thanks” to Chris and his family for supporting Sk8ology’s “Skateboards as Art” movement. After the install Cole took us to the Black Box training facility for a little skate time. See video of the day below:

SK8OLOGY Deck Displays - Product up for review
March 9th 2009,

Chances are that if you’ve been a skateboarder for many years of your life, you greatly value the memories of learning your first tricks, meeting you first pro, competing at a contest, skating a secret spot, your first backyard pool, ditch or even getting sponsored by your local shop. Yes, those are the significant moments that collectively make up our individual lives as skaters and are some of the important ones we hold on to.

And along the way, we tend to hold onto material pieces that relate and reconnect to those vivid memories. Without a doubt, the most visual pieces from our own histories are our skateboards and we often hang them on our walls to reflect and project the good times of our youth. Over the years, the intricate task of displaying those decks has become a bit like a MacGyver episode using nails, fishing line, and all sorts of odd fasteners to showcase a prized possession. Often, the result isn’t so great looking.

Thankfully, SK8OLOGY takes the process a huge step further and makes the skate deck presentation in our homes and offices second to none. Their floating Deck Displays range from 1 to 5 decks and are very easy to assemble with the simple use of a drill and a screw driver. Now’s the time to pull out those decks from the closet or attic and showcase those skateboards that hold special memories for you or even to show off limited edition boards that bear some sick graphics.

Drop on over to SK8OLOGY’s site and have a look around for some ideas and displays that fit your personal collection. We’re psyched on these displays and we’re sure you will be too!

Surf Expo in collaboration with Sk8ology and ISM premiered a 160 deck fine art on skate decks gallery September 10th through 12th, 2008.

The black protective curtains were pulled off the entire 110 foot long side of Team Pain’s Volcom Sponsored mini ramp and in their place the Sk8ology Gallery went up. The Sk8ology Gallery featured over 160 different artists work from both in and outside of the industry. Skateboard industry notables included: Steve Caballero, Dave Duncan, Chris Pastras, Jason Lee, & Rob Gonzalez.

The decks are all part of a moving exhibition that is raising funds for www.nowthatyouknow.org and www.ismcommunity.org. Nkirote Mbaya, Founder of Now That You Know, said "We are grateful to all the artists who contributed their work and the sponsors to make this fundraising effort a reality. Thanks to you, many girls living below the poverty line will be able to remain in school in Kenya."

"Thousands of shop owners from around the world got to experience the melding of fine art with the skateboard deck medium…and judging by the response we received, our movement of Skateboard Decks as Art is gaining momentum."

Los Angeles, October 3rd, 2008.

Rob Dyrdek commissioned Sk8ology to display his 20 year history of professional model Decks for the set of his upcoming MTV show: Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory.

The 120 Dyrdek Pro decks, all made by Alien Workshop under the AWS & SEEK brands, were saved for the last 20 years by Rob's Dad and have been boxed and in storage.

Mark "Schmiddy" Schmid, owner of Sk8ology commented, "It's amazing to see a collection of this size and condition in a single venue. Rob is doing it right by making sure his decks are well lit and at the center point of his Fantasy Factory Headquarters."

Working within Hollywood timeframes can be challenging and the Sk8ology crew was still working on set when filming started....Sk8ology's Videographer, Chris Klich, stated: "One second we are putting up boards and filming in a giant construction dustcloud, and the the next second the entire 25,000 square foot set is being hosed down in anticipation of the show starting.....it was crazy."

Dyrdek commented, "I love it.....it makes me feel good to share all this skateboarding history."

The Sk8ology install is the first of several installs planned for Dyrdek's MTV set as Rob stated, "We're gonna do a friends Deck section as well."

This is the first time the action sports industry has a product that allows consumers to display their collectable decks in a museum quality manner. "The melding of good interior design aesthetic and the action sports hardgoods has officially launched." said Mark Schmid, the inventor of the Sk8ology product line. Business on the first day was brisk with more than 20 international distribution companies placing orders along with dozens of orders & interest from several hundred domestic skateboard shops. The Sk8ology system effectively displays just decks or the complete skateboard. They are available for sale online at www.deckdisplay.com
